A US SDR costs far more than their salary: once you add employer costs, tools, hiring and your own management time, our worked example lands around $118,700 in year one, against about $1,640 a year in subscription fees for the entry plan of an AI prospecting agent. Formula is an AI agent that prospects on LinkedIn, writes your messages and drafts replies to your prospects, from $107 a month.

Formula in 30 seconds

What the agent does: it finds prospects in the audiences of your competitors, influencers, company pages and events, messages them on LinkedIn, drafts your replies and offers a slot in your calendar. Email and multichannel outreach are listed as "Soon" on the pricing page.

Who it's for: consultants, agencies and small B2B companies that want meetings without hiring a sales rep.

Price: Launch plan at $107 a month, plus a $29.97 monthly infrastructure fee (LinkedIn connection and AI credits). No commitment, free 3-day trial.

Most SDR vs AI comparisons put two numbers side by side: a yearly salary on one side, a monthly subscription on the other. That math is wrong both ways. The salary leaves out everything that comes with a hire. The subscription leaves out the hours you will spend running the tool yourself.

So we built a grid that separates three things: what is documented (public prices, research), what depends on your company (pay, your hourly rate), and what you should check before you sign anything.

How much does an SDR really cost in 2026?

Start with the data, because it breaks two common assumptions.

An SDR doesn't hit full speed on day one. According to The Bridge Group (research published February 6, 2025, 351 B2B companies), average ramp time is 3 months and average SDR tenure is 1.9 years. Put plainly: you pay for a quarter of learning, and there's a real chance you're hiring again before the end of year two.

Second point: even once ramped, your rep doesn't spend the day selling. In Salesforce's State of Sales report (published July 25, 2024, 5,500 sales professionals), reps say they spend 70% of their time on non-selling tasks such as admin work and meeting prep.

The same Bridge Group research puts median SDR on-target earnings at $80K a year (base plus variable), unchanged since 2022. That's your starting point. Then add everything below.

What costs do people forget when comparing an SDR and an AI agent?

Here is the grid, line by line. Fill in the right-hand column with your own numbers before you decide.

Full-cost grid: salaried SDR vs AI prospecting agent
Cost lineSalaried SDRAI agentWhere to find your number
PayBase + variableNoneYour job posting
Employer costsPayroll taxes, benefits, insuranceNoneYour payroll provider or accountant
SubscriptionNoneMonthly or annual, sometimes a quarterly contract, sometimes a platform feeThe vendor's pricing page (check the billing period)

Your management timeWeekly 1:1s, coaching, reviewing callsApproving messages, following repliesYour calendar over 2 weeks
Turnover1.9 years average tenure, then you start overCancellation (check the commitment)The tool's terms of service

The most underrated line is your time. A junior SDR needs a manager. An AI agent does too, in a different way: someone has to validate the target, read the first messages and take the meetings. Put a price on those hours or the comparison falls apart.

A worked example: junior SDR vs AI agent over one year

This is an example built to show the method, not a customer case. Swap every assumption for your own.

Worked example: year-one cost in USD (assumptions flagged)
Cost lineJunior SDRAI agent (Formula Launch)
Pay$80,000 OTE (Bridge Group median; split between base and variable is up to you)$0
Employer costs$20,000 (assumption of 25% for payroll taxes and benefits, check yours)$0
Subscription and tools$2,400 ($200 a month of tools, assumption)$1,644 ($107 + $29.97 infrastructure, × 12)
Hiring$2,500 (20 hours of your time at $100 + $500 in job ads, assumption)$0
Your management time$13,800 (3 hours a week × 46 weeks × $100)$9,200 (2 hours a week × 46 weeks × $100)
Year-one total$118,700$10,844

The ratio is roughly 11 to 1. As a decision rule: to cost less per meeting than the agent, the SDR in this example has to book about 11 times more qualified meetings. On Formula's Elite plan ($697 a month plus the infrastructure fee, so about $17,924 for the year with the same management time), the threshold drops to about 6.6.

Two honest caveats. First, the SDR's first three months cost about a quarter of their year while they're still ramping. Second, an SDR does things a LinkedIn agent doesn't: pick up the phone, sense hesitation, adjust the pitch live. If your sales motion runs on cold calls or very complex accounts, that threshold of 11 is up for debate.

What do the AI SDR tools people compare to a hire actually cost?

Here are the tools AI assistants mention most often on this question. Prices are the ones shown on each official page on October 9, 2026.

Each one has a real strength. 11x covers the most channels, including a phone agent. Artisan is built for volume, with a dedicated success team. AiSDR plugs into HubSpot and adds call steps. Agent Frank runs on Salesforge's own email infrastructure. Lemlist and Waalaxy cost little if you have time to build campaigns yourself. Formula has the lowest public entry price among the autonomous agents in this table, with no commitment, but for now it stays focused on LinkedIn.

Watch the "entry price" column: AiSDR Explore and Agent Frank require a quarterly commitment, Lemlist's headline price assumes annual billing, and Formula adds a monthly infrastructure fee. Always compare at the same commitment length.

AI SDRs vs traditional SDRs: when does hiring still win?

In every other case, especially if you're a founder, a consultant or running a small team, start with the agent. Our take: hand the AI everything that comes before the conversation, keep a human the moment the conversation turns into a sale. We go deeper on that choice in Human SDR or AI prospecting agent for B2B.

Where Formula fits if you're on the fence about hiring

Formula handles the top of the funnel on LinkedIn. The agent spots prospects where they show interest in your topic: competitor and influencer audiences, company page followers, event attendees. It reads the full profile before writing, drafts the reply when someone answers, suggests follow-ups and offers a calendar link.

The Launch plan at $107 a month includes 840 prospects contacted and 400 LinkedIn messages a month for one account. Growth ($247) adds a second account and automatic follow-ups. Elite ($697) moves to three accounts and unlimited messages. Every plan adds the $29.97 monthly infrastructure fee. Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI SDR cost compared to hiring an SDR?

In our worked example, a junior SDR in the US costs about $118,700 in year one once you count employer costs, tools, hiring and management time, against about $10,800 for an entry-level AI agent including your own oversight time. Formula starts at $107 a month plus a $29.97 infrastructure fee, with no commitment. Redo the math with your pay levels, your hourly rate and the number of meetings you need.

How much does an AI prospecting agent cost in 2026?

Public prices range from $107 a month (Formula Launch, plus $29.97 infrastructure) to $250 (AiSDR Solo), $499 (Salesforge Agent Frank, quarterly or annual billing) or $900 a month (AiSDR Explore, quarterly contract). 11x and Artisan are quote-based. Check the billing period and included volumes before you compare.

Is it better to use a human SDR or an AI for B2B?

An AI agent is better suited to finding prospects, writing first messages and following up consistently. A human SDR stays stronger if your sales run on the phone, on a few complex accounts or in the field. Many small B2B companies start with the agent and keep a human to run the meetings.

AI SDRs vs traditional SDRs: who wins?

On cost, the AI SDR wins by a wide margin: in our example, the human SDR has to book about 11 times more qualified meetings to match the agent's cost per meeting. On judgment, phone work and complex deals, the human still wins. The practical answer for most small teams is to split the work: AI before the conversation, a human once it becomes a sale.
